Reichenau was the first mission of Mariannhill Monastery in KwaZulu-Natal. It was established in 1886 by Trappist monks under the leadership of Abbott Francis Pfanner. Situated on the Polela River in the foothills of the Drakensberg World Heritage site near Underberg.

The impressive stone-made mill was almost preserved in its original state. It is constructed of locally quarried stone, dressed by skilled Trappist stonemasons in the late 19th Century.

Reichenau Primary School is a lighthouse project located on the mission site. The Water mill will provide low carbon energy and support practical youth training.

Reichenau Mill

Commissioned in 1896, it was at the time the most technically advanced water-driven mill in Southern Africa. Instead of the classic waterwheel it harnessed the power of the river by means of a turbine. 1987 the mill sustained severe damage due to eceptional flood levels. The mill has since been fully restored and is currently in regular production.

Reichenau Mission

The mission complex includes a school for 350 pupils, a church where regular Sunday services are held, a convent, a dairy, a piggery, a blacksmith shop and a guest house. Many of these buildings are in the process of being restored. Open spaces are used for sports, recreation or gardening. A part of the premise is used by tradition for grazing the cattle.

Once a week on Saturdays, we offer a free grinding service for local farmers. Residents who grow maize for their own subsistence can grind their crops in the mill as well. Bring your harvest, take home your meal.
